St. Olaf Sesquicentennial

Then & Now Tour: Stop 6

Christiansen Hall of Music, Tweet Hall of Music

Around us is what is called the fine arts quad, since all the buildings here house St. Olaf’s Fine Arts programs. The modern-looking building is Christiansen Hall of Music, named in honor of St. Olaf Music Department founder F. Melius Christiansen. The hall has offices, practice rooms, and rehearsal spaces for St. Olaf’s choirs, bands, and orchestras. It also features the uniquely beautiful Urness Recital Hall. The building was designed in the 1970s by Edward Sövik ’39, a St. Olaf alum who founded Northfield’s local architecture firm, SMSQ. Across the way and connected to CAD is the Tweet Hall of Music, which features more studios and practice rooms. The brick building you can see is the back of the Theater Building, which we will talk about later in the tour.
