Then & Now Tour: Stop 4
Ytterboe, Buntrock, Finseth Bandstand
Buntrock Commons, Ytterboe Hall, Finseth Bandstand
Here you see Buntrock Commons, the college’s student center. It houses the post office, the cafeteria called Stav Hall, the Cage cafe, and the Lion’s Pause, an event space. It is also home to the Taylor Center for Equity and Inclusion, the Lutheran Center for Faith, Values, and Community, Student Activities, and the Wellness Center. It was built in 1999 on top of where the famous Ytterboe Hall, the first separate men’s dormitory, once stood. After Ytterboe Hall was completed in 1900, it stood for nearly 100 years. On this spot was also a bandstand, where the St. Olaf band could entertain students, staff, and Northfielders alike.

On the Way…
Off to the right is Boe Memorial Chapel, which was built in 1953, exactly 30 years after Hoyme Chapel burned down. Boe is connected to Buntrock, which in turn is connected with Rolvaag Library with glass breezeways. This symbolized the college’s recognition and commitment to nurturing and growing the Mind, Body, and Spirit.
