After graduation in 1971 as a music major, I went directly to graduate school at the University of Iowa. At the music placement exam in a large auditorium, I saw one of my classmates. I had no idea she was also going to Iowa. The exam was long and intimidating. My classmate and I were the first to finish in that large crowd. In that situation, one thinks you missed some pages. No — got them all. She and I confidently walked out ahead of college music teachers having a difficult time completing the test. When we both found out we had passed all remedial requirements and could start immediately on degree classes, I realized what a good music education I had received.David Engen ’71
Whenever I answer the question of where I went to college, I generally get a very positive response when I say St. Olaf. When choosing a college while in high school, I was accepted at many schools and was undecided. My brother, Vernon Stenberg ’52, was working at that time as a field director in Wisconsin, describing St. Olaf to high schoolers in that state. He said to me, “I can get the whole state of Wisconsin to go to St. Olaf, and I can’t get my own sister to go?” Uff da! Well, of course, I chose St. Olaf!! The education I received was top-notch, and I have been forever grateful for the quality of this college! I am now 90 years old and am still working as a psychotherapist. (I received my master’s degree in social work from Fordham Graduate School of Social Service.) Thank you, St. Olaf, for maintaining standards of quality over all these years!Mary Heller ’56
