Ole Reflection: A Phi Beta Kappa Alum’s Career in Medicine and Military Service

Slideshow

My Story

I was inducted to the St. Olaf chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, and went on to earn my Ph.D. in 1971 and my MD in 1975 from the University of Minnesota. While in medical school, I moonlighted as night rider with the Hennepin County Ambulance and as a jail doctor. I had multiple scientific publications. I served in the Army Active Guard Reserve for 24 years, including active duty in Iraq where I served as a medical infantry company and combat support hospital commander and a flight surgeon. I played hockey at St. Olaf, but did not letter. My wife, Virginia Eng Peterson ’67, graduated the year after I did, and we have been married 57 years so far. Two of my children — Daniel Peterson ’96 and Rebecca Peterson ’98 — graduated from St Olaf.
