Ole Reflection: The Power of Caring Professors

Slideshow

My Story

I was an English major, and really almost all of my professors were fabulous.

My senior year, then–Department Chair Jonathan Hill invited the graduating English majors to a spring tea at his home — complete with a tour of the English garden in the backyard and really delicious treats. (One of my favorite things about the Hill was that professors would frequently have small events at their Northfield homes/backyards!)

The seniors had prepared a little, roasty tribute to our professors. Unbeknownst to us, they had prepared an elaborate, witty, and pretty spot-on roast of all of us!

“My adviser, Karen Cherewatuk, is someone with whom I’ve stayed connected to — we enjoy raucous visits every time she comes through Chicago. She is one of a few women who are formative in my life, and I will forever be indebted to her for her teaching, her humor, her resilience, and her love.”

The English Department had come together to share all they knew about us — and it was clear they cared about us academically, but also as human beings with lives and interests outside of just the classroom. My adviser, Karen Cherewatuk, is someone with whom I’ve stayed connected to — we enjoy raucous visits every time she comes through Chicago. She is one of a few women who are formative in my life, and I will forever be indebted to her for her teaching, her humor, her resilience, and her love.
