Then & Now Tour: Stop 10
Quad, Old Athletic Field, Theater Building, Memorial Chime Tower
Quad, Old Athletic Field, Theater Building
We’re in the center of the Quad, the campus’s outdoor space for studying, relaxing, and socializing. This area, like the rest of the campus, was once a lush forest. After it was cut down for farming and later integrated into St. Olaf property, this open part in front of Mellby was the original athletic complex, complete with a grandstand, a track, and a football field. The Theater Building, the only other brick building left on campus besides Old Main and Steensland, was built in 1920 and was the original gymnasium. It also served as the school’s chapel after Hoyme Chapel burned and before Boe Chapel was built. After Skoglund was built in 1967, the old gymnasium was efficiently converted into a theater complex, with classrooms, a standard theater, and a black box theater where the old swimming pool used to be.

Memorial Chime Tower
Finally, we have the Memorial Chime Tower. Built by members of the St. Olaf community over the summer of 2003, this Scandinavian-style wooden tower commemorates the lives of students who have died while enrolled at St. Olaf. The chimes, tuned to the key of F. Melius Christiansen’s iconic hymn “Beautiful Savior,” are engraved with the names of those students. On windy days, the sound of the chimes can be heard almost everywhere on campus. It serves as a precious and beautiful reminder of those we have lost both past and present here on the Hill.
