Then & Now Tour: Stop 9

Mellby Hall, Hoyme Hall, Larson Hall, Hilleboe Hall, Kittelsby Hall

This building on the quad is Mellby Hall, built in 1938. It was the second women’s dorm built after the original Mohn Hall. It was followed by Hoyme, Larson, Hilleboe, and Kittelsby halls, all of which were originally women’s dorms. These buildings symbolize St. Olaf’s commitment to co-education, which has been in place ever since the school’s founding in 1874. Interestingly, Pastor Hoyme, for whom Hoyme is named for, was against co-education, so it’s ironic that the school chose to name a women’s dorm after him.
